Car Shampoo Review: Valet PRO Wash and Protect Shampoo 1 Litre – £8.40 / 5 Litres – £21.95

Valet PRO’s new products have been impressive and innovative, coming on in leaps and bounds. Like many manufacturers they review and update their own current range too, and their latest for this is Wash and Protect Shampoo.
Having tried their old Wash and Protect we can safely say that this is a huge improvement. For a car shampoo its viscosity is surprisingly thin. We’d liken the consistency to a Robinsons juice drink. Talking of that, the Wash and Protect also smells great, with a cherry marzipan scent to it – just make sure you don’t drink this product!

According to the instructions, between 10 – 30ml of product is needed per 5 litres of water. For the test on the VW Golf (see pics below), we tried the thinnest mix, using 20ml with 10 litres of warm water. The product foamed really very well and a slippery feel was left behind on our skin when we’d given the water a good stir by hand.

As the product is kind of aimed at (according to the blurb on the bottle) maintaining cars at dealerships – that actually makes sense. 20ml per bucket of water is good economy, especially when you take into account the price. The 5 litre bottle is a total bargain! The Wash and Protect Shampoo includes ‘rust inhibitors’ for paintwork, so that 1993 Ford Fiesta sat on your lot which you can’t seem to sell, will at least be protected in the meantime. It’s a quick and easy product to use too, and that’s a big bonus if you’ve got 20 vehicles to wash in the space of a few hours.

The results we got were fine, and the Golf we washed went from un-maintained (no wax or polish applied since, well, ever) dirty rep-mobile to squeaky-clean in only a few minutes with no hassle. There’s actually something else this product does – you can use it as a maintenance wheel cleaner. As the viscosity is thin, simply pour it neat into a spray bottle, spray onto wheels, agitate with a wheel brush and leave for 5 minutes or so.

It actually worked fairly well like this too! Although some very ingrained and stubborn dirt refused to budge, it still cut through thick and baked-on brake and road grime – we didn’t even use a power washer on the wheels, just a common garden hose with a sprayer attachment. That, in our opinion, is a big plus if you’re in a hurry to get your vehicle clean.

We also used it for detailing around the badges and locks etc, and it performed well in these areas. Again, spray it on neat then use a soft brush to get into all the areas around the badges etc, leave to soak for a couple of minutes and then rinse the product off.

The finish on the bodywork was good, and bought back the metallic ‘pop’ in the paint. It also left behind a just-waxed feel. Although there was no water beading afterwards, it did help to sheet the water off more efficiently.

Car Shampoo Test: Britemax Clean Max 32 fl. oz U.S (946ml) – £10.99 / 1 U.S gal (3.78 L) – £29.99

First off, facts and figures. We were very surprised by just how little was needed of this shampoo – 1 – 2 U.S. fl. oz per 5 gallons of water. In old money that’s 30 – 60ml to 19 litres water! As the test car was so dirty we used 30ml for 9 litres of water, and this worked absolutely fine. We could even have got away with using 15 – 20ml of product.

On the car shampoo tests, we use a hosepipe with a sprayer nozzle instead of a pressure washer, as a pressure washer will get rid of the majority of dirt anyway – and that wouldn’t be enough of a challenge for the shampoo’s eh!

The Clean Max worked impressively well and shifted a month’s worth heavy winter road salt and grime with ease.

After rinsing the suds off the car and drying it off, the bodywork was left looking slick, and had a slippery feel to it – almost like it had had a layer of wax applied. We tested the water sheeting abilities before and after, and they were definitely improved.

Any wax we had previously applied months ago had almost gone anyway, and its sheeting and beading abilities has disappeared along with it. Beforehand, water just sat on the paintwork, but after a wash with Clean Max, it ran off the paintwork well.

Another thing we noted was that hardly any water runs or marks were left behind afterwards, this was probably down to it being pH neutral and phosphate-free.

As is the trend with newer car shampoo’s, it had a nice Grape fragrance to it, which only serves to improve the ‘fun’ side of washing your car.

If you buy the 946ml size, it comes with a very handy measurer and dispenser, maximising the economy of it. Price-wise, Britemax say you can get up to 30 washes out of this size, meaning that it’s only 36p per wash. A cheap, and good quality product overall.

Car Shampoo Test: Turbo Wax Car Shampoo 4oz (118ml) – $8.99 / 16oz (473ml) – $11.99

After using this shampoo on cars that had come through some of the worst British weather in years, we came to the conclusion that this is impressive stuff. It cuts through the worst grime to leave a healthy look to the paintwork. Usage is half an ounce (15 ml) per gallon (3.7 litres) of water, so around 40 ml of product is needed per bucket of water. We used slightly more of the product in our buckets as the cars we tested it on were so dirty. Although this is not the best dilution rate that we’ve come across, Turbo Wax Car Shampoo does perform well and, as it states on the bottle, is highly lubricated, making your wash mitt or sponge glide easily across paintwork, even if the grime is thick. It is also formulated not to remove polish or wax either, so all your hard work is kept safe.

8/10 A good product to use, won’t remove wax or polish, dilution rates are slightly high.

One of the very few car shampoo’s we’ve come across that actually produce proper beading after washing your vehicle.

It cleans well, leaves a nice glossy finish and adds a good layer of protection onto your paintwork afterwards too. The finish is very much as if you’d waxed the vehicle and it will keep whatever wax or polish you have on already topped up nicely, making it last longer.

They recommend 50 – 80 ml of Poseidon’s per 5 litres (1.3 Gallons U.S) of water. However, we found that by using warm water you could get away with using just 35 ml to that mixture instead, saving you a considerable amount of the product per wash.

9/10 A great car wash which genuinely waxes and protects in one go.

Muc-Off Übershine Luxury Shampoo 1 litre – £7.99

We really like this product. The shampoo foams up very well to create a really thick and creamy lather and feels very high quality when using it. It leaves a really deep and lush finish to the bodywork and leaves it virtually spot free afterwards. However, it shouldn’t be used in hot weather as it can cause ‘spotting’ on the paintwork, but this is the case with most car shampoos anyway. Did we mention it smells excellent? No? Well it does. A nice aroma of Apples wafts about the car while you’re washing it, making the experience an even nicer one. The bottle is pump action and for every 4 litres of water you’ll need about 13 squirts of it. We found that as the product works so well that you can get away with using only 4 – 5 litres of water to clean an average sized saloon car, meaning that you will get around 25 car washes per bottle of Übershine. The product is also bio-degradeable, which is nice as it’s kind to the environment. The price is very good when comparing it to similar manufacturers products.

9/10 Excellent product. Well priced, does a great job and smells nice too.

CarPlan Triplewax Car Shampoo 375 ml – £2.87 / 500 ml – £3.99

Cleaned and shined the bodywork well. It didn’t leave any watermarks or streaks on the bodywork, but left quite a few on the glass. Only 15 ml (or 1/3 of a capful) is needed per bucket, so it does go a long way and it makes the price a big plus. There’s not much foaming but again, it’s not really needed anyway so that’s not bad point. We felt that it left a good basis for waxing a car too.

8/10 Worked well, cheap price but a good quality product.

Armor All Wash & Wax 1 litre – £3.28 / $6.49

We were hugely impressed by this product from Armor All. As it was so cheap, we expected to get a cheap product. However, it cleaned the car excellently and left a great shine too. It has Carnauba wax in it, which explains the shine it gave. Just 30 ml (3 caps) is needed per bucket of water, so the price works out really cheap. Don’t expect a lot of foaming, as that’s not how this product works plus a shampoo that foams a lot doesn’t necessarily mean it’s cleaning well either. As per instructions you need to wash a section of the car (say, the roof or bonnet) at a time, then rinse the Wash & Wax off. It really gets right through the dirt on the car, and when cleaning, the wash mitt simply glided across the bodywork. It lefty virtually no streaking on the paintwork or glass, and after wiping the car dry with a microfibre cloth, the results were excellent. It’s a good base to use before waxing your car too.

9/10 Great price, and left a brilliant shine and finish to the car’s paintwork.

Is it any good? On a few levels, it’s very good, yes. It removed the dirt and grime easily, and seemed to make the wash mitt glide over the vehicle with ease. Not too much is needed, as one capful will do for 10 litres of water. However, after using it, we decided it needed slightly more. Something like one and a half capfuls will do a better job. Slight negatives means it shouldn’t be used in strong sunlight or on hot bodywork. We tried this just to see what happens and the Shampoo Conditioner dried very rapidly and left some streaks on the paintwork. It does leave a good shiny finish and water beads up on un-waxed paintwork well too.

8/10 Doesn’t work too well on hot days but the price is good and it leaves a nice look and finish.

A pump-action bottle. Okay, okay, yes we know. The price seems ridiculously high, and it certainly seems it at first glance. But consider this. The Supernatural Shampoo is an extremely concentrated formula and dilutes to 1:1500 parts water. In other words, fill an average household bucket 3/4 with water and add just 6 ml (3 squirts) of shampoo and your away. Take into consideration also that most other ‘concentrated’ shampoos by other manufacturers only dilute to 1:400 part water, and this makes Dodo Juice’s Supernatural Shampoo a relatively cheap product. How good is it though? First off, you can definitely tell that the ingredients used in the product were of the highest quality and we were massively pleased with the performance of it.

Cleaning power was deep, and it cleaned off all ‘motorway mileage’ dirt and grime with ease. It left an excellent shine to the paintwork and glass too. Even in hot weather the Supernatural Shampoo worked very well and left no water spots or marks afterwards, and it made the wash mitt glide slickly and easily across the bodywork. There’s no smell to the product as it is, as the name suggests, completely natural in both colour and fragrance. A hugely pleasing product to use that makes your car look great, even if you haven’t waxed it before.

10/10 Amazing product which is well worthy of the 10 points! Easily as good as their Sour Power Shampoo. Ignore the high price as it works out as cheap as other manufacturers shampoos in the long run anyway.

Another great product from Dodo Juice. This shampoo contains wax grade carnauba, which gives a really good shine to the paintwork and also adds a layer of protection to it too. It is well priced, as it not only does an excellent job but goes a fair way as well. It says to use between 2 and 4 capfuls of the stuff to a bucket of warm water, but we only used 2 capfuls and this washed a huge and very dirty 4×4 with no problems. It smells amazing (kiwi and apple?) and even after you’ve washed and dried the car you can still smell it.

10/10 Yes, it really does earn this rating! Good price, good job, shines and protects your vehicle using the best ingredients and smells amazing . You get what you pay for here.
