Glass cleaners can be a bit of a pain. They all promise to give a ‘streak-free finish’ but they rarely, if ever, actually deliver on that.

Somehow though, ValetPRO have actually done it with their brand new Glass Cleaner. Yes, it’s official. We said so, and we know because we thoroughly tested it.

Our test involved a car with a very dirty windscreen stained with nicotine, weeks of grime build-up and most probably chemicals from evaporating dash cleaners. Whatever, it was truly filthy, and while ‘normal’ glass cleaners tend to get rid of the majority of the dirt, they also tend to push it around and leave streaking behind.

So, how did ValetPRO’s Glass Cleaner fare? Well, they promised us the usual ‘no streaking etc’ spiel and they were absolutely telling the truth!

We sprayed the Glass Cleaner onto the inner-side front ‘screen, and gave it a wipe down with a proper glass-microfibre cloth, and the dirt came straight off no problems, and it stayed on the cloth too – no pushed around the windscreen. It was the same story with all the other windows too.

Sometimes the smears aren’t noticeable as you clean, but when another oncoming car’s headlights on full beam hits your ‘glass at 1am on a rain-soaked night, believe us – it’s noticeable (and also hugely distracting)!

We checked at the times when the smears are most obvious, in both direct sunlight, and at night when they show up easily under street lighting. There was none. We tried hard to find some evidence of smearing but there simply wasn’t any.

We even tried on one of the hottest days of the year – it hit a sweaty 33˚C and being the hardy chaps we are, we risked life and (burnt) limbs, by spraying it onto the glass and giving it a wipe down. Still nothing. We can’t test it anymore as it’s beat us into submission now and we manly admit defeat – ValetPRO have succeeded where many fail. It’s a top notch glass cleaner which works perfectly.

We also tried it on a bluetooth system with soft-touch screen, and it cleaned it fine. It’s worthy to note that it can be used on window tint film, as it won’t damage it.

What we like about ValetPRO’s Glass Cleaner is that once sprayed on, it didn’t evaporate too quickly. It only dries up as you wipe it off, not whilst it’s just ‘sat’ on the surface, making it easier to use. Some cleaners vaporise so quickly that you barely get chance to wipe over the surface before it’s gone. This one was all A-Ok though.

Glass Sealant Test: Nanolex Glass Urban 100ml – £19.99

Long-term test – 5 weeks in.

If you’ve ever been driving in heavy traffic and it rains heavily, it can make driving a bit of a nightmare. You strain to see through the water running down your windscreen, even with the wipers on full speed, and car light seem a mile away when really they’re just a few metres in front. Driving in these conditions is tiring mentally and physically. This is where glass sealant products come in handy. In fact, if you’ve ever used one before, and then you get in a car where it hasn’t been used, you really do think ‘How on earth did I get on without it before?’. A sealant works a bit like a car wax in that it provides a layer of protection on top of your glass, making the water bead up and run off easily, or even blow straight off without the use of your wipers. We think every car should have a glass sealant applied to the glass all around. It would make the roads miles safer for everyone.

Nanolex Glass Urban is an exceptional Glass Protector. We chose this one to test on a car that does mostly city driving, as the water will blow up the screen at lower speeds than their other glass sealant.

Before you apply it though, first off give it a thorough cleaner with Nanolex Glass Cleaner Premium. This isn’t an advert for their glass cleaner – the fact is that their glass cleaner will remove even built-up and ingrained dirt, and cleaning the glass comprehensively is a must before applying their Glass Urban. It will make it last longer and be far more effective overall. Another must is to clean your wiper blades thoroughly too before you apply this stuff, as dirty wipers can also impede the longevity of the product.

Don’t use any washing-up liquid or washer bottle fluid as this will make the time the Glass Urban lasts shorten severely (it’s the same case with all glass sealants). You’ll notice that now you’ve used the sealant, bugs, tar and general road grime will clean off a good deal more easily anyway.

After we applied Glass Urban we noticed an immediate difference when it started to rain. The wipers cleared the water away far far more easily, visibility improved beyond belief, and at about 30mph the water starts to blow off the screen. In fact, when we did a bit of motorway driving in heavy rain, we were able to drive without hardly needing t0 use the wipers. Another thing to note is that strangely, the harder it rains, the better this stuff works! If you also apply this product on rear and side windows, it makes even more sense. After a drive in bad weather, you’ll feel much, much less stressed and tense. It’s definitely a product where we really can say ‘try it, you will not be disappointed!’.

It’s been 5 weeks since we applied the Glass Urban, and it’s still going just as strong as when we first applied it. It’s supposed to last 3 months if used properly, so we’ll keep an eye on it to see how it does, and update this review as necessary.

We tested this product on windscreens which hadn’t been cleaned properly for a long time, and there was no previous glass protector applied to them either (which always makes cleaning a lot easier).

Unlike ‘traditional’ glass cleaners, this one is a slightly thicker liquid which is poured out of a bottle, rather than being sprayed. We applied it with the little cotton pads which were supplied with it, and this took around 3 – 4 minutes. Firstly, you dampen a microfibre cloth, apply a small amount of Glass Cleaner Premium to the windscreen or straight onto a cloth,and rub in a circular motion on the glass. After this, remove it with another decent cloth (we found microfibre is best). If it’s dried on it can be slightly more difficult to remove, but in this case just dampen the cloth to remove it, and then dry the glass out with another cloth.

So okay, it did take longer than a spray cleaner to apply and remove, but it did do an amazing job. It contains micro-abrasives, which act a bit like using a fine polishing compound in that it will take away even ingrained dirt. Dirt being ingrained into glass? Sounds strange, but yes this does happen if glass isn’t cleaned properly and regularly.

Looking at the price, you may be put off a bit, but consider this – to clean a whole (and extremely dirty) windscreen we probably only used about 2 ml of product, so even the small bottle should last you a very very long time – working out almost as cheap as a normal cleaner buy!

X2 Rain Shield

X2 Rain Shield Extra Strong – £15.99

A liquid. This is not a glass cleaner but rather a protector. We found it to work very well and it does last a good amount of time, even with regular bad weather putting it to the test. The bottle has an applicator pad on and you simply squeeze the bottle lightly to wet the pad then rub it onto your windows. Leave it for around 5 – 7 minutes or until it hazes, and remove with a slightly damp cloth. Hardly any is needed and and we think you should be able to get around 6 full cars’ use out of a bottle which is about a years worth. At first the rain will blow off your windscreen from 35 mph and above but as it wears off the speed needs to be higher. We have had it on for around 6 weeks now and on the side and rear windows it still works perfectly. On the front windscreen it has nearly worn off but still works well at 60 mph and above. This has been through bad Autumn weather and it will definitely last a lot longer through the Summer weeks. A good product that works like a good wax would on your glass.

Muc-Off Glass Cleaner  500 ml – £5.99

A pump-action cleaner. We found this to clean glass really well, just as the bottle says. Virtually no effort is needed to get a really good finish. After using a microfibre cloth with the product, we noticed that as you’re wiping the product off, it dries quickly, but leaves behind no streaks, even on really dirty glass. Other useful things about this glass cleaner include it killing 99% of germs (ever sneezed near your windscreen? Of course you have. Ah now the germ killing makes sense eh). It can be used on Sat Navs and after-market window tints too as it has no solvents, alcohol or ammonia in it plus it’s kind to the environment being bio-degradable. It passed our one on-once off test with ease.

For now, we’ve downgraded this to an 8/10. When it works, it works exceptionally well, but we have found on quite a few different pieces of glass that it can leave greasy-looking streaks on them, which are hard to remove. When we work out what the problem and solution is, we’ll upgrade it to a 10 again.

Mer Rain Away 500 ml – £9.00

A pour on liquid. This product is designed to ‘Effectively repel rain from windscreens and visors etc. at speeds above 40 mph’. That’s Mer’s words anyway. So, did it work? Yes. Absolutely. In fact, we don’t know how we did without it before. As the rain hits the windscreen it simply pushes up to, and over, the top of it. Using wipers, the screen is cleaned thoroughly is one sweep. At motorway speeds in light rain the wipers are barely needed as the rain will clear off the ‘screen anyway. The only slight problem we came across was on the applying of it. After applying two layers (as instructed) it left a slightly greasy finish and a bit of hard work was needed to remove it. Apart from that though. Great product.

9/10 Worked as it stated on the label. Excellent product. Well worth buying.

Mer Windscreen Cleaner 250 ml – £6.00 / 500 ml – £9.00 / 1 litre – £13

A pouring liquid. We liked this product right from the off. Simply pour onto one cloth and rub it onto the glass, and buff it off with another cloth. We recommend using microfibre cloths to get the best result. After it was applied it dried quickly and was ready for taking off. The finish was excellent, and it really left the glass gleaming. Another plus it that, unlike a spray, it’s easy to control and won’t go all over bodywork etc. Hardly any is needed to get a really great finish and it took care of even the dirtiest windscreen with ease. We also used it on the rest of the car’s windows and found that it worked just as well as on the front.

9/10 Excellent finish, easy to use, no streaking and well priced too.

Mer Rapid Spray Glass Cleaner 500 ml – £8.00

A pump-action spray. We were happy with this product. It cleaned really dirty glass with ease, even removing old sticker glue easily. It’s a breeze to use too, simply spray on, leave for a few seconds, and wipe over. It passed our ‘once in, once out’ cleaning test too. It left the glass clean and sparkling. Price is slightly higher than other similar products.

Armor All Glass Wipes 15 wipes – £2.99 / 25 wipes – £3.99 / U.S 15 wipes – $4.99

These worked pretty well. They had plenty of moisture in them and a full front windscreen could easily be cleaned with one of the wipes. They claim to leave a streak-free finish, however they did leave a few streaks but these were easily buffed out with a soft cloth.

The wipes did leave a bit of lint behind when cleaning the glass, but this will blow off once the moisture has dried out. We like that fact that the packet is a handy size for your glove box. A drawback is that some of the competition is cheaper.

7/10 Worked quite well but left some slight streaking and some lint behind. Price not as good as the competition.

Glass Cleaner Test: BIG WIPES Automotive Glass Wipes / 40 wipes – £4.99

These performed well. They promise a ‘smear-free finish’, but they pass the ’One Wipe Over’ test? Yes and no. If the weather is ridiculously hot, so the glass is peeling your skin off, they don’t pass. The wipes dried out too quickly, so at least two or three were needed to do the front windscreen inside. But, the fact is that almost all window cleaners will fail the heat test as they evaporate too quickly to do a decent job. So they’re all in the same boat.

When the weather is cooler, the Automotive Glass Wipes do an excellent job, and one wipe cleaned an entire windscreen inside with ease and, most importantly, left it streak-free. We felt the wipes could do with being slightly larger in order to cover a bigger area more quickly.

8/10 Good price, worked well and passed all-important ‘One Wipe Over’ test.
