Firstly…

We ain’t some Dodo Juice fanboy club here on CarProductsTested. From the general high scores they get from us, it may seem like we are – but they just happen to make a great deal of, well, great products. We report it like it is, for your benefit people! Look at our photo’s for evidence of how well (or badly) a product works. We just receive a product, test it, and review it. If it’s good, we say, if it’s pants, we say. End of.

So, let’s get on with it.

Initial thoughts

Viewing the kit for the first time there’s patently a ‘Wow-Factor’ there, and this is certainly a unique product. Anyone else doing these? Not that we know of. The product in question is the Dodo Juice Home Brew Kit. For those of you that love their car wax (and if you’re into cleaning your car – you unquestionably should be), this kit is gonna make you salivate big time.

It is, no doubt about it, a completely and utterly brilliant idea. The best way to describe it is to use Dodo Juice’s own blurb, ‘… your very own chance to create a premium car wax, on your stove at home’. Yes people, you can now make your own wax! How very cool. You even get to personalise it by naming it whatever you want.

From the off, the kit exudes quality. The box is made of tin, but has an old wooden crate motif. On opening it, you have a foam mat and on top of that the instructions in print (even these are on high quality thick paper), your sticker kit and a wooden stirrer (like you get at coffee shops).

Underneath all this, place in thick foam cut-outs is your ‘Solid Phase’ 250ml heavy duty glass jar with what looks like Carnauba shavings and something else, and the plastic bottle of ‘Liquid Phase’, which smells beautifully of Bees Wax.

Using the kit

We aren’t going to go through all the instructions on here – buy the flipping kit if you want that – but the upshot is that making the wax is extremely easy, as long as you’re not a clumsy beggar. It involves using a pan, water, placing jar with Carnauba pieces in said water, then bringing water up to boiling, adding the Liquid Phase to jar, stirring and finally cooling.

A couple of tips here for when you do buy the kit. 1. Use a big pan to leave more room to work with. 2. When you’ve placed your jar in the empty pan, leave the lid on the jar while pouring the cold water into the pan. Even a small amount of water getting into the mixture can ruin it! Leaving the lid on stops this from happening. 3. Remove the jar lid before bringing water up to temperature.

This is clearly a big boys toy, and is all the better for it! Making the wax at home really does make it feel like your own brew, even though Dodo Juice has done most of the work for you. When we were mixing the solid and liquid phases, the whole kitchen smelled amazing, and the end result is a very cool-looking bright green wax.

Stickering the jar up, Dodo Juice left a space for you to name the wax whatever you like. We went with ‘Green With Envy’, as it’s green and the finish it gives will clearly make people jealous. Oy, before you even think of stealing our Home Brew name – go find your own!

How good is the Home Brew wax? 

Onto testing the wax itself. We tested in on a pretty chilly day (a 4˚C/39˚F), and although the instructions state to leave it 15 – 25 minutes to cure, we found that actually leaving it longer in this weather made it easier to remove. We applied it by sponge applicator, and after putting it on a little too thickly on a couple of panels and realising that when Dodo Juice instructing a ‘thin layer’ to be applied, they mean a Thin Layer. Thick Layer = Hard Removal.

You hardly need any of the Home Brew wax to cover a panel well, although applying it onto warmer bodywork will make it a much easier job, and it’ll go even further.

The finish to the paintwork was magnificent, with a superb depth and warmth added to what was wax-less and fairly lifeless paint. Beading and sheeting is superlative, even after just one thin layer of the Home Brew wax. Dodo Juice say the wax will last 2 – 3 months, but as always that’s dependant on how you maintain the car’s bodywork afterwards. We recommend using a pH-neutral wash/wax shampoo, and use a detailing spray afterwards too.

Is it worth the money?

We’d say Yes. You are getting the privilege of creating your own wax, which even on its own is an awesome idea. Add in the other elements, such as the all-round quality of the kit and the huge 250ml jar of long-lasting wax, and be assured, your cash will be well-spent.

As a gift or present for someone, there’s not a chance it’ll be anywhere near the dismayed sound of ‘oh great, a pair of socks’. It’s going to be more a case of ‘jump-around-the room-like-you’re-12-again‘.

Anything the kit could improve on?

The only thing we’d maybe like is to have other colour and scent options. Apart from this, it’s all good.

Polish Angel (Polish as in the product, not the country) is a fairly new company hailing from Germany. With an array of beautifully-presented and well thought-out, high quality products aimed at the higher end of the market, this company looks to go far.

Along with the Concours de Beauty wax, we were sent a few products to be used together as a stage-by-stage set as a forerunner to applying the wax, which we will also review individually too.

Although the Concours de Beauty is definitely at the lower end of Polish Angel’s price range, to many it will still not be considered a cheap wax at €49.95 (£45.00) for 150ml of product, which includes a free sponge applicator pad. So, let’s see if it’s worth the money.

For starters, the manufacturer’s blurb claims that if proper preparation is done before applying the wax (wash, clay bar, light imperfection remover, sealant, wax) then it will last for 6 months from just one layer. Our test will be an ongoing one, which we will update as time progresses. If this is the case, then the higher cost is easily justified.

As a product range though, we think that the Polish Angel products definitely deserve a bit of time spent with them instead of just slapping them on – these are the type of products that could take pride of place on your garage shelves as they look so nice, and any true car cleaning enthusiast will fully appreciate this.

As mentioned, we did all the paintwork preparation work beforehand, so when it came to the final stage – waxing – we were well and truly ready to ‘test drive’ the wax.

For starters, the response to the scent of the wax is usually split 50/50. People either like it or find it strange. Personally, we were of the latter opinion at first, but after using it for a while the smell really started to grow on us until we ended up actually liking it a lot. For your information, according to the manufacturer’s blurb it has an aroma of ‘walnut, kiwi and vanilla’.

Application was beautifully easy and the waxed-up applicator pad slid across the paintwork, leaving behind a buttery-like texture. Although the wax comes in only 150ml tubs, a small amount covers a lot of bodywork.

After leaving the Concours de Beauty to cure for the recommended 15 minutes, we removed it. Removal was almost as easy as application, and we’d applied it to  warm paintwork too, which tends to harden wax quickly. The finish on the paint is warm, deep and certainly classy and we think this would look absolutely beautiful on a classic red Ferrari or something similar.

Polish Angle claim that they have around 60% of grade 1 pure Carnauba in this wax, but since a lot of carnauba-based waxes now give a similar finish, finding differences between them is not always easy. What we can report however, is that we loved the final result. Beading and sheeting qualities were good, but maybe not quite as hydrophobic as some other waxes. We’ve yet to see the longevity of the product, and we’ll update this review as the months pass.

Update: After only a couple of washes with Polish Angel’s Glissant Shampoo, the paintwork’s hydrophobic qualities were diminished by probably 30%. We are looking into whether the shampoo is to blame for this. The paintwork still feels slick and looks great though, so although the beading is diminished it’s still very well protected.

We also tried this was with a more simple test which was to clay the paintwork, use their Esclate Lotion Final Finish polish (applied by hand with a sponge applicator), and then to apply the wax. Although the finish was nice, it wasn’t quite as deep as other cheaper waxes, although sheeting and beading was fairly good still.

It’s all down to personal preference of the product, but if you are looking for something new and in all honesty, fairly unique from a owners perspective, then Polish Angel is definitely a good avenue to go down. Their products have a lot of class about them, and visually the packaging is some of the most attractive and beguiling on the market.

7.5/10 Putting in the right amount of preparation reaps the rewards with this wax. If you don’t though, it’s almost a waste.

Riding on the back of the already excellent and much-loved ‘normal’ Naviwax, Naviwax Ultimate is a truly astounding wax.

This Japanese product punches well above its weight, and gives an even deeper and longer-lasting shine. Its beading qualities are simply superb, and it will even hide swirl marks in paintwork to an extent.

Longevitiy is also key here, and this stuff will last relentlessly for months on end. It has around 37% of pure Grade 1 Carnauba Wax in the ingredients, adding to its ability in out-classing other more expensive waxes. We tested it over a period of months on various vehicles (it can be used on any colour), and found that it will last longer than the standard Naviwax – which has about 23% of Grade 1 Carnauba – and will also bead and sheet water better in that time too.

Talking of beading and sheeting, the Ultimate excels at both of those jobs. Take a look at your car first thing in a morning after you’ve applied the wax, and compare it to the rest of the cars in the street – yes, their paintwork now looks crap compared to yours.

Another point we liked about the Ultimate is that you don’t need to spend hours preparing your bodywork before applying it – as long as it’s in reasonable condition, the wax will make it look amazing. Of course, if you do spend the time prepping your paintwork, it’ll look, and last, even better.

Application and removal is ultra-easy, as the wax goes on like melting butter so is easy to spread and only a little is needed per panel. Unlike the ‘normal’ Naviwax, this can be left to cure for a little longer. We’d only apply it to 2 panels (doors etc) at a time though. Handily, it can also be applied whilst the car is wet after a wash and rinse, to speed things up a little.

Does it justify the extra £15.00 above the standard Naviwax though? We’d say definitely Yes. The extra 30 grams of wax you get is enough for a good four more applications, plus – as we stated earlier – it will last much longer. If £50.00 sounds expensive for a tin of wax to you, consider this; in reality, one coat of Naviwax Ultimate should last for 3 months or more. and out of a 280g tin, we would say that thirty applications is easily possible – that’s 7.5 years worth of wax! Even if you apply 2 coats of wax per time, that’s still over 3 years of wax per tin.

We like the fact that the tin itself isn’t pretentious, showy or expensively packaged, it just gets on with the job in hand, and – literally – does what it says on the tin.

Naviwax Ultimate gets a thumbs-up from us, and we really can’t see how they’d improve on this wax – but then again, this is a Japanese wax and if there’s ever a nation to improve on perfection – it’s them!

10/10 Even better than the standard Naviwax. Last months, not weeks, and will out-perform and out-shine far more expensive waxes.

We officially love detailing sprays. Throughout the bad winter weather, detailing sprays, or spray waxes, have been a life saver. Days with good enough weather to wash your car are few and far between, and it quickly gets dark and goes cold – so anything to save time making your car look great goes down well in our book. When it comes to the Summer months, and you just want to be out and about driving your shiny pride and joy around, spray waxes save loads of time and effort and you’ll still have great-looking paintwork with the right product.

There are now quite a few good quality spray waxes out on the market, and we can safely say that Britemax’s Spray & Shine joins the ranks of being up there with the very best of them – the ‘cream of the crop’, as the saying goes.

You can use it on wet or dry vehicles, as long as you’ve just washed it that is. We found that when using it on a wet car, it nicely acts as a good drying aid, speeding up the time it takes to not only dry off your car but also has the added bonus of waxing it at the same time.  Using it on a dry car is exactly the same and you will get astounding results from the Spray & Shine.

After spraying it on, spread it around with a good quality microfibre cloth and then use another side of the cloth to remove the excess. The results are completely as the manufacturer states – it gives a beautiful deep and wet look shine. The shine doesn’t lose it’s edge after a few days though – instead you are looking at a good 2 – 3 weeks of  decent protection and good looks.

Although the beading qualities are not quite as impressive as Naviwax’s Liquid Detailing Spray for example, it still holds its own in that department. The pricing of the Spray & Shine is actually very competitive, and at around £11.00 for over 700ml it’s fairly easy on the old wallet.

Car Wax Test: Valentine’s Road and Track Wax 250 gram – £44.95

We tested this Road ‘n Track wax alongside Valentines other wax – Carnauba Concours – to see how the two fared next to each other.

As with the Concours Carnauba, the Road ‘n Track did supremely well in both the finish and durability categories. The car we tested it on had all previous wax removed first using washing-up detergent, and then it was put through a full machine polishing process – which happened to coincide with the Valentine’s waxes we needed to test.

Three layers were applied over the course of a week, to the bonnet, roof and boot areas, the reason being that we were testing Valentine’s other wax – Concours Carnauba – on the sides and lower boot. Application was, again, a joy – the reasons for this being that it spreads wonderfully and virtually effortlessly. It goes on a lot like butter and although it’s hard to spread thinly because of the texture, this is not a problem as removal is easy. We’d recommend leaving it to cure for around 10 – 15 minutes depending on the climate.

Another reason for us loving the application process was because the product smells so good. It has a pleasant aroma of honey and coconut oil.

Results? The Road ‘n Track’s finish is superb and has a definite air of class about it. It leaves a mixture of a rich depth and a crystal-like shine. The wax definitely accentuates any curves a car may have, and even ‘normal’ cars seem to have an elegant touch about them once you’ve used this product.

When we had finished waxing the test car – a metallic dark Green 1999 Seat Toledo TDi – we were simply astounded at just how good it looked, and we sat and admired those looks for a good amount of time before finally taking it out of the garage and onto the road. Even this everyday ‘mile muncher’ was transformed into a sleek and slick-looking vehicle. So, if you are fortunate enough to own something beautiful such as a Bentley Continental GT or a Ferrari 458 Italia – this wax will enhance its looks to an even greater degree.

To fully appreciate the Valentines waxes, we strongly recommend at least clay barring the car first and then using a paint preparation product before applying the wax – it deserves that much at least.

How long has it lasted though? We applied the wax over 5 months ago and it still gives excellent beading and a good shine too. We have not applied any other wax between now and then, and all we have done is use good quality wax-friendly car shampoo’s when it comes to washing the car.

What about the cost?  This is one wax which punches well above its weight, and will outperform and outshine more expensive waxes easily. The 250 gram pot is nearly £45.00 and as with Valentine’s more expensive wax, has over 80% of the highest grade Carnauba wax in the ingredients.

Another factor is that not a lot is needed when it comes to application, and a little spreads a long way too (apparently you will get over 30 applications from one tub), so the 250 gram tub it comes in will last for a long, long time.

Any negatives? Whereas some waxes can just be applied without needed to ‘prep’ the paint beforehand, and still look very good, Valentine’s waxes definitely need the car’s paintwork to have a fair amount of attention before applying it in order to get a really really decent shine. All waxes benefit from a bit of paint prep before application, but these seemed to need that bit more than usual. Having said that, the results you do get once you have done this are – as already stated – outstanding.

Out of the two Valentine’s waxes we tested, we really can’t tell the difference when it comes to finish as both are as nice as each other, and the longevity is looking about the same at the moment too. We would recommend going with the Road ‘n Track wax over the Concours Carnauba as you will save nearly £25.00 in the process and get as good results.

Car Wax Enhancer Test: ValetPRO Zelos Fortifier 500ml – £29.99

When Valet PRO told us they would soon be launching this new product, we were very excited. And when we finally managed to get our mitts on it, it made us even more excited. The details we were given was that they were developing a sprayable product which made removing any fully-cured wax easy, but would also add months more protection to the life of whichever wax it was used it with.

Testing it was easy, and that’s exactly what this product is all about. We first of all washed the bonnet of a car with a wash mitt and a bucket of warm water mixed with washing-up liquid detergent to remove any traces of wax that may have been applied previously.

We then dried the area, before applying a thick layer of ValetPRO Artemis Wax Seal. We then left the wax to cure for around 10 minutes. A quick note – the weather was sunny and windy, which dried out the wax nice and quick. ValetPRO recommend using a paint preparation product before apply your wax to achieve even more impressive results.

After we checked how dried-on the wax was (very), we decided to really test out the Zelos Fortifier by adding another layer of Artemis on top of the already-cured layer, just to make it ultra difficult to remove. After we’d left that for another 15 minutes, we tried to remove some of the wax from a small area of the bonnet using a microfibre cloth. This was ridiculously difficult and a throughly frustrating exercise.

Enough of that hard work rubbish – it was time to break out the Zelos Fortifier. After spraying a light misting all over the bonnet, we left that for around 30 seconds before removing it with a microfibre cloth.

The kit we used.

Unbelievably, removing the wax was now just like wiping excess water away as you would when drying a car! What was left was a really great finish to the paintwork, and the metallics sparkled beautifully in the sunlight. It’s not just a nice look it leaves behind though, as this product will add at least another couple of months to the life of your preferred wax, and even longer if you use a decent car shampoo for maintaining it afterwards.

The Zelos Fortifier doesn’t evaporate quickly, so it gives you easily enough time to wipe it all off without having to rush the job. Although it looks greasy, it comes off easily and doesn’t leave behind any streaks of marks.

You can also use this product with a DA (Dual Action) machine polisher, and in actual fact it gives even better results. Simply apply your wax (after claying and prepping paintwork), allow it to cure, mist on the Zelos and using your DA on a slow speed with a finishing pad, spread the wax/Zelos. After this, remove using a soft microfibre cloth.

Purely by accident, we noticed a bit had got onto the unpainted plastic bumper and after wiping it off, it shined nicely and also water beaded up on it excellent – so that’s another thing you could use it for.

We realised that you could actually use this as a quick wax or detailer, but it would be a massively expensive way to do it, so stick with what it is meant for.

A bottle of the Zelos seems expensive as an initial cost layout, but when you weigh up what results you get, just how easy it makes waxing plus the fact that only a tiny amount is needed per panel, then any reservations about price drift away.

A unique and utterly brilliant product. Makes wax removal easy and adds months of extra protection in seconds. You’ll never want to wax again without it!

Spray waxes can be a funny ol’ game. People want a decent finish, plus good protection and at least some water beading effect. But that’s what you would mostly only get front just using a ‘normal’ wax right, and although quicker to use, a spray wax would never give you anywhere near the same results, right? Well, a new dawn in spray wax is here people, and that dawn has bought us Naviwax Liquid Detailing Wax.

We loved this Japanese-made stuff from the day it was sent to us. It’s ultra-easy to use, yet it gives outstanding results.
To use, give your car a good wash (obviously) and either dry the car off (or use on the wet surface) then simply spray on and wipe off, and that’s it – you’re finished. You now have 2 – 4 weeks protection on your paintwork. Considering that this is ‘just’ a spray wax, it gives an amazing depth of shine to paint, and makes water bead as good as nearly every other wax out there. In fact, we’ve tested quite a few waxes in the past where this stuff would put them to shame on a beading level! Any metallics in paint will ‘pop’ right out in the sunlight, and bodywork will take on a wet look.

In the photo’s below, we chose a car that has not been waxed in many, many months, and it never had the paint ‘prepped’ beforehand either.

We also found that if you use this on the exterior of the rear and side windows, it will also give them a degree of protection, and will make seeing out of them easier when it rains.

No matter what sort of spray wax you’re used to – and whether it’s expensive or cheap – for simplicity, ease of use and stunning results – this stuff will be very hard to beat, and it’s worth every penny of your hard-earned cash.

Car Wax Test: Turbo Wax Spray-N-Wax 4oz (118ml) – $8.99 / 16oz (473ml) – $15.99

A spray wax. If you like your car to have that ‘just-waxed’ feel after you’ve polished or waxed it, Spray-N-Wax is a must. The manufactures blurb states that it leaves behind a ‘super slick shine’, and… it does just that! After we’d washed and dried out our ‘test’ cars, we sprayed a light misting of the product onto the recommended area of 2′ x 2′, and then wiped it straight off, using another microfibre to take off any excess. This worked very well, but we also found that leaving the Spray-N-Wax on the paintwork for one or two minutes before removing it meant a deeper shine and an even slicker feel.

The shine is deep and not unlike a good quality hand-applied wax in its finish. The beading effect is not quite as good as some other waxes give, but that can be forgiven for the small amount of time it takes to fully wax your car with this product. Although the product will only last around 2 weeks per application, it’s such an easy job to re-apply it, that it’s not really a worry.

Car Wax Test: CarPlan EcoCar Polish  500 ml – £5.87

We’re slightly confused here. Is this stuff a wax or polish? It contains Carnauba wax and Bee’s wax and there’s no mention of it cleaning paintwork – so surely it’s a wax?

It’s Eco-friendly, but does that mean it’s not as good as other waxes (or polishes)? We found it was easy to apply and take off, however, on paintwork that had been neglected for a while it left marks and streaks which were difficult to remove. On good paintwork it left a bright polished finish, rather than a deeper waxed look. Endurance wasn’t very inspiring though as it only lasted between two and three weeks. The price may be cheap but as the endurance is rubbish and it doesn’t exactly give a brilliant shine, you are better in the long run paying more and getting a longer lasting wax.

6/10 A cheap wax/polish (?) which works in line with the price.
